Sleep Science Reviews: Silentnight Memory Foam Pillow

“Good morning! How did you sleep?”

If I asked you that right now, what would you say? Do you have a headache or stiff neck? Did you spend at least some of the night tossing, turning, punching, and fluffing your pillow to “get it just right”?

There’s a lot of pressure on your pillow to perform.  I certainly put a lot of pressure on mine. Over the years, I have found myself consistently on the hunt for the “right” pillow, and I seem to have finally found it!

Pillows have a big task ahead of them. They’re designed to keep the upper body in alignment while you sleep, which is no easy task. That pillow you’re tussling with each night is meant to relieve common back and neck pain as well as relieve pressure and counterbalance various points in the body so as to keep your shoulders, hips, and any other joints happily in alignment – ache and pain-free. Hence my search for the perfect pillow!

Enter the memory foam pillow. Well, to be fair, it first hit the market for consumer use in the early 1990s. Research over the years has suggested that memory foam pillows contour to the body, which leads to pain reduction, and you guessed it, a glorious night’s sleep.

I recently tried out a memory foam pillow for myself, and so I can vouch for its plush yet supportive sleep surface.  After my recent experimentations, I would go as far as calling them “miracle foam pillows.”

Head and neck support doesn’t come easy. In fact, traditional “supportive” pillows I have used in the past tended to be hard and somewhat uncomfortable. When you’re using the right memory pillow, there’s a careful balance between support and comfort.

And it’s not just me singing the praises of certain memory pillows recently – statistics have too. Studies as recently as 2020 show that memory foam pillows lead to better quality sleep (and we can all do with that) and provide much-needed neck and back support.

This all said you’re probably clamouring to get yourself a memory foam pillow, but here’s the reality; not all memory foam pillows are made equal. And just because the packaging has “memory foam pillow” stamped on it, it doesn’t mean you’re getting the real thing.

This is why I’ve pieced together this review on one of the top memory foam pillows I recently tested out. If you’ve been considering a memory foam pillow, here’s everything you need to know.

Spoiler alert, my top pick out of the many options out there is the Silentnight Traditional Memory Foam pillow, which retails on Amazon for around £17.99.

What to Look for in a Memory Foam Pillow

Before I share the many features I encountered when trying out the Silentnight Traditional Memory Foam Pillow, let me run through what makes a good memory foam pillow. These are the factors I had in mind when testing the pillow out.

Support

In my quest to find the right pillow, I considered the dimensions, design, and foam fillings available in a memory foam pillow. These factors can influence how much support you receive from a memory foam pillow.

For example, a thicker, broader pillow will provide increased cushioning for those looking for additional support. I prefer a firmer pillow, so extra support is always a must for me. Here’s another spoiler alert; the Silentnight Traditional Memory Pillow offers this type of support!

Material

I also prefer my pillow to have covers that are easily laundered. Always check the care instructions before purchasing to ensure the covers can be removed and washed. Everyone loves a fresh-smelling pillow.

Warranty and Pillow Trial Periods

I always check to see if a product comes with a warranty or an optional trial period. Most costly pillows will offer a warranty or trial period to give customers time to decide if the pillow is right for them. These money-back guarantees are a great incentive to buy a quality memory foam pillow without the worry of wasted money.

Price vs. Quality

I have found that price is not always an indication of quality, as not all memory foam pillows are made equal. Therefore, when choosing my memory foam pillow, I took the time to view all their individual benefits without being swayed by the price tag.

More about the Silentnight Memory Foam Pillow…

From the moment I opened the packaging, the fresh linen smell is what really surprised me. I didn’t need to air the pillow, and its soft, springy consistency was comfortable and supportive from the first night. That said, some memory foam pillows may smell a bit strange when you first get them. That shouldn’t put you off. Simply air the pillow out for a few hours.

I found that this pocket-friendly priced pillow is excellent value for money and is by no means mediocre in what it has to offer. Its high-quality 100% polyester microfibre cover creates a superb water repellent surface suitable for preventing the absorption of perspiration and saliva. Perfect for the secret drooler in us all!

In addition, the Silentnight Traditional Memory Foam Pillow is filled with 100% Polyester and surrounded by a pillow shell made of 100% cushiony Visco Elastic memory foam. These layers mould to form your head and neck shape, thus providing greater comfort while ensuring you receive the firm support you need. I found the cushiony layers so comfortable and supportive that my neck and back pain is a distant memory.

Pros:

  • Cooling/breathability to prevent heat discomfort
  • Naturally hypoallergenic inhibits the growth of bacteria and dust mites
  • Retains its shape

Cons:

  • Memory foam pillows are large and plump as they have a greater surface area to increase support. Therefore, you may consider the pillow to be a little too high in the beginning. However, with a bit of patience, you will find that your head sinks into its generous layers, and you become used to the support it is providing. No more fluffing and punching pillows for me!

Who This Memory Foam Pillow is Best Suited to?

People with Allergies

Sneeze, cough, sneeze and cough some more that’s the sleep pattern of the average allergy sufferer and all because of their pillows! Often common pillow fillers such as feathers can aggravate allergies causing disrupted sleep. The good news for tired allergy sufferers is that the Silentnight Memory Foam Pillow has hypoallergenic properties.

These properties prevent the growth of bacteria and dust mites, the main aggravators of allergies. As an allergy sufferer myself, this pillow ticks the tissue box for me as I don’t struggle with the usual sneezing and allergy symptoms caused by other pillows.

People with Back Pain

I found that the Silent Night Memory Foam Pillow improved my quality of sleep and wake up refreshed and deeply relaxed. This is due to relieving back pain. As a sufferer of back pain just like me, you might be sceptical about how a pillow could help your pain.

Back pain is quite a common complaint in today’s modern world as we spend a lot of time in front of computers and screens. The Silent Night Memory foam pillow reshapes to support your head and neck, resulting in improved spinal alignment, thus promoting deeper relaxation and restful sleep.

People with Sleep Apnea

I often wake up with a headache. It’s the kind of headache that gives me a foggy head and leaves me feeling unrested. Since using the Silentnight memory foam pillow, I have found that my morning headaches have dissipated, and I start the day fresh and focused.

Of course, if you’re struggling with headaches and restless sleep, it could be a sign of sleep apnea, a condition where there are pauses in the sleepers’ breathing or when breathing becomes very shallow during sleep. This memory foam pillow can help align the airways by providing spinal support, resulting in easier breathing.

People with Shoulder Pain

There’s nothing worse than shoulder pain. It causes you to tense up your neck and back,  compensating for the pain caused when you move. This results in additional referred pain in your neck and back. With many outside factors causing shoulder pain, it can be hard to pinpoint the reason behind it.

The Silent Night Memory pillow provides firm support for your head, neck, and back reducing pressure in areas that can be instrumental in the cause of shoulder pain. After using the memory foam pillow for a week, I could definitely feel a difference in my shoulder and neck tension.

People with Neck Pain, Arthritis, and Even Sports-Related Injuries

The best form of healing is through sleep. The body rejuvenates, recuperates faster, and deals with pain effectively when you can rest properly. People with neck pain, arthritis sufferers, and people suffering from sports-related neck injuries can benefit from this pillow firm support almost immediately. I found the pillow to be soft yet firm enough to provide support for my head while reducing pressure on my neck and shoulders, which is perfect for me and other side sleepers.

Not Recommended For

People with a Hypersensitivity to Heat

Memory foam retains warmth, and this can make you feel hot and sweaty when sleeping. Heat and excess perspiration may affect conditions such as eczema and menopause, causing discomfort. Intolerance to heat is usually when your body is not regulating its temperature correctly, which may be aggravated by the warmth generated by the pillow.

Off-Gassing Sensitivity

Memory foam can contain VOCs (volatile organic compounds) that can give off a distasteful smell when the pillow is new in some instances. Sensitivity can cause headaches, nausea, asthma, and eye and throat irritations. However, the smell does dissipate in a few days in a well-ventilated room.

How the Silentnight Traditional Memory Foam Pillow Performs in Different Sleeping Positions…

When I slept on my back…

  • I am a back sleeper, so the pillow’s performance in this area was important to me. After a week’s use, I noticed better neck support and spinal alignment, which eliminated that cricked-forward neck pain I have experienced when using other pillows.

When I slept on my side…

  • If lying on your side is the only way to get any shut-eye, the pillow reduces pressure on the neck and shoulders, helping the body establish a healthy sleep posture. I tried this position out and found it immensely comfortable. In fact, I fell asleep quicker than normal.

When I slept on my stomach…

  • For the stomach sleeper (duvet burrowers) out there, this pillow provides sufficient support without sinkage, keeping the head, neck, and body aligned. I am not a stomach sleeper, but I did give it a bit of a try and must say it was comfortable to lie in. I might become a stomach sleeper with the Silent Night Memory Foam pillow.
